FIDE Technical Programmes
(1) Risk Management in Islamic Finance
23 September 2010 The Risk Management in Islamic Finance will be conducted by Mr Rafe Haneef. The programme will discussed the overview of Sharia governance as well as key issues in Islamic Risk Management. Topics that will be covered are the principles and products of Islamic Finance, the risks peculiar to and key challenges in Islamic Finance.
Rafe is currently the Managing Director at HSBC Amanah responsible for Global Markets in Asia Pacific. He has played a leadership role in developing Sukuk and Islamic structured and project finance since 1999 at HSBC, ABN AMRO and Citigroup. He was previously the Head of Islamic Banking for Citigroup Asia based in Kuala Lumpur. He was also responsible for developing Malaysia as a regional Islamic finance hub for Citigroup and spread its Islamic business footprint across the region. Prior to joining Citigroup, he established the Global Islamic Finance Department at ABN AMRO based in Dubai and was in charge of the Islamic wholesale and retail businesses for the group. Prior to that he was with HSBC Amanah in London & Dubai focusing on Islamically-structured cross-border transactions and the Sukuk market. He was also a managing director at Fajr Capital, a Dubai-based Islamic investment company, looking at principal investments in the Islamic financial sector.

(2) Banking Insights - Everything you wanted to know about banking but didn't dare ask

Professor Nabil will be back for another session of Banking Insights this September. This programme is designed to provide directors with limited or minimal experience in banking an opportunity to better understand the business of banking. This programme is structured to aid directors in navigating the multi-faceted issues that confront a banking institution, how they are managed and red flags to look out for.
Professor Nabil N. El-Hage is Chairman of Executive Training and Consulting S.A.L and recently served as Adjunct Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School in the General Management area, and was also Senior Associate Dean for External Relations. He first joined the HBS faculty in 1984, immediately after obtaining his MBA from the School.Prior to returning to HBS in 2003, El-Hage worked in a private equity and venture capital with TA Associates and Advent International, as well as on the operating side, as CFO of Back Bay Restaurant Group. He also served as Chairman and CEO of Jeepers! Inc. a private equity-financed national chain of indoor theme parks for nearly ten years. El-Hage also has experience with McKinsey & Company, where he was a research Consultant before business school.

FIDE Specialised Board Programme
(1) Board IT Governance and Risk Management - Breaking the Technology Code (New!)
27-28 September 2010
This newly developed programme aims to provide directors of financial institutions with insights into principles, processes and methods that will assist them in giving proper oversight over executive management's planning and execution of IT investment and capability. This two day programme will cover the areas, issues and best practice thinking in the area of strategy, execution, skills management and risk management in IT.
This programme will be conducted by David Brearley who has 40 years experience in technology, 20 years as the leader of the IT function in large, international institutions including ten years as the global CIO of Standard Chartered Bank. Living in Asia for the last 12 years, he has also consulted with a number of institutions in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand and observed at first hand the use of IT locally.

(2) Building Audit Committees for Tomorrow
Group 3: 11-12 October 2010
Group 4: 14-15 October 2010
The role of the Audit Committee has significantly expanded in recent years. Essentially, Audit Committees fulfill two roles on behalf of the board, and more broadly on behalf of the financial institution and its key stakeholders;
Financial reporting: reviewing and recommending the interim and annual financial statements, including accounting choices and estimates, internal controls, internal and external audit, and disclosure parameters.
Financial oversight: using the financial reports to monitor the performance of the financial institution and its management, including financial and non-financial performance indicators, benchmarking, scenario gap analysis, strategic initiatives, capital investments and projects, and most importantly risk governance.
This two day programme will update participants on best practices and current trends internationally in these areas, to better equip Audit Committee members to enhance their performance and contribution.
This programme will be conducted by David A.H. Brown, the co-founder of the International Corporate Governance Centre in Montreal, the National Awards in Governance in Toronto, the Public Enterprise Governance Centre in Ottawa, and the Directors College in Niagara. David has a vast experience sitting on boards of various companies.

(3) Risk Management Committee programme (for Insurance Companies' Directors)
25-26 November 2010
The Risk Management Committee programme covers the role of risk management committee in advising the Board on risk matters, understanding risk appetite and how to monitor against it and discussing in depth on the major risks of insurers particularly interest rate risk, insurance and operational risks. It also discusses the technical aspects of risk reports to help committee members to understand them better. Participants will also learn about forward looking risk assessment as opposed to consideration of the historic record.
David Bobker, who will be conducting this two-day programme, has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, working in various capacity including internal and external audit, compliance officer and IT manager. He was also consulted by Financial Services Authority on risk management and regulation of financial institutions in the UK. Dr Bobker's qualifications include a DPhil in mathematics from Oxford university and he is a qualified chartered accountant.

Module 3
Groups 16, 17 and 18 will commence Module 3 in September 2010. The objective of this module is to help Boards appreciate their oversight role in risk management and the adoption of key risks and organisational structures for managing risks. It will address the controls required for managing risks, new roles and responsibilities of internal auditors in the risk management process, key issues in financial reporting and how Board can obtain some assurance that adequate risk controls are in place.
